Tamil Nadu launches one nation, one ration card scheme

Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami launched a one nation one ration card scheme in the state. The scheme allows the ration card holders to get their monthly entitlement of foodgrains from any PDS outlet of their choice in the state and across the country.

The scheme will be implemented in 32 districts, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpet and Tiruvallur, on October 1.

The inter-state ration card portability has been launched in 25 states so far under the central scheme, Integrated Management of Public Distribution System. The state government has integrated the existing PDS database with the central system under the repository of all National Food Security Act (NFSA) beneficiaries.

If the PDS cardholders in the state could not establish the biometric authentication due to technical reasons, arrangements have been made to provide the entitlements through one time password (OTP) sent to mobile phone linked with smart card and Aadhaar card. The elders and ailing individuals, who cannot visit the PDS outlets, could avail the entitlements through individuals authorised by them.

The end-to-end computerisation of PDS was carried out during the previous Jayalalithaa regime at Rs 330 crore. Subsequently, chief minister Palaniswami launched the biometric enabled smart cards for PDS in April 2017.
