- Tamil Nadu to ‘colour code’ expectant moms
ð Simple changes in treatment and first-aid protocols — categorising patients as red, yellow and green based on their medical condition — brought down mortality rates in road accidents in Tamil Nadu Now, the state health department is working out a similar protocol to tag pregnant women in an attempt to reduce maternal mortality rates (MMR).
ð Pregnant women visiting state-run antenatal clinics will now be categorised as red (high risk), yellow (moderate risk) and green (safe).
ð Until 2009, Tamil Nadu was second only to Kerala in low MMR.In the 2010-2012 report, Maharashtra grabbed the second place with 87 deaths (per 100,000 births) compared to 90 in Tamil Nadu. Last year, the gap between the states narrowed to five. This year, Maharashtra, at 55, has been placed eight points lower than Tamil Nadu.
ð About 30% of maternal deaths occur among women who have more than two children, and their percentage in TN had remained at 7.5% for the past three years. Anaemia, malnourishment, pregnancy-related diabetes and hypertension are often contribute to the problem.
ð The state reduced MMR from 66 per 1 lakh live births in 2014-2016 to 63 per 1lakh live births in 2015-17. “Although TN stand third in the country and we are nearly half of country’s average, the incremental reduction in MMR is only three points, which is less compared to some other states
