- Nirmala Sitharaman launches PM-SYM in Tamil Nadu
- Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday launched the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan Dhan Yojana in Tamil Nadu.
- It had been introduced to identify and respect the hard work done by the workers in the unorganised sector.
- “Shram means hard work, which is there throughout their lives. This scheme named ‘Shram Yogi Maan’ means giving respect. Under the contributory scheme, a contribution is given to them to help them financially after they turn 60.
- There are 72 lakh unorganised workers in Tamil Nadu of which 20,000 were joining the scheme on same day as per information from the state labour department.
- The PM-SYM is a pension scheme for unorganised workers in the age bracket of 18 to 40 years, who earn less than Rs 15,000 a month and who are already not enrolled in pension schemes like New Pension Scheme (NPS), Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) scheme or Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). The worker should not be an income tax payer.
- As per the scheme, each subscriber to the PM-SYM scheme shall receive a minimum assured pension of Rs 3,000 per month after attaining 60 years of age.
- Under the contributory 50:50 scheme, age-specific contribution has to be made by the beneficiary and a similar contribution is made by the central government. The contribution has to be continued until the age of 60.
