- Nod for 20% raise in seats to government arts and science colleges
- Two weeks after preventing universities from granting approval for additional intake of students in affiliated arts and science colleges, the higher education department has partially allowed government arts and science colleges in the state to increase the intake by 20%.
- However, no decision has been taken yet on allowing government aided and self-financing colleges to do so. This was unlike last year when they could increase the intake by 15 and 10% respectively above the sanctioned student strength.
- According to official data, 4.1 lakh students from Tamil Nadu joined arts and science colleges in 2017. With a tougher NEET and JEE this year, more number of students applied for arts and science courses this year. Those from rural background and economically weaker sections had to depend only on government colleges.
- Hence, to accommodate these students who cannot afford to study in self-financing colleges, the total number of seats had been increased by 20% in nearby government colleges, according to orders issued on Wednesday in this connection.
